Love at WinCo (poem) by Rowan Gibson

·

Hand in hand
Walking across the hot asphalt
To haphazard shopping carts,
Through motion sensor doors
Into the chilly blast
Heading straight for the produce
Splitting off to grab
Peppers and apples and tomatoes
And cabbage and oranges,
Limes and lemons, meeting
In front of the vegan selection
Leaning into you in the bulk aisle
Picking out pasta,
Lentils and legumes
Spilling spices into sacks
On to the bakery
To see what is on sale
Several sorts of sourdough to select
Comparing cans' contents
Choosing too many flavours of juice
And many bottles of mineral water
Picking up food for our fur family
Agreeing in the frozen aisle
This cut of French fry
That flavour of ice cream
Checking out in a rush
Bagging groceries together
And hurrying to the car
Where we remove our medical masks
And kiss and smile
Before driving home
Hand in hand
